Frequently Asked Questions

Number of packages

There is no limit to the number of packages that can be shipped daily.

Shipping supplies

Nylink will supply each participating member with an initial supply of bags, bag closures, and a label template. Please only use the LAND bags for sending materials to your LAND partners through the LAND system. If your library’s supply of LAND bags or bag closures is running low please notify Dennis Mott at Schenectady County Community College.  Mr. Mott is the volunteer LAND bag coordinator and will replenish your supply as soon as possible.

Expected Turnaround Time

Velocity Express is the courier service utilized by LAND.  Velocity maintains an expected turnaround time of 24 hours within a zone (meaning north or south of Newburgh) and 48 hours between zones (if an item has to cross Newburgh to the north or south to reach its destination). Courier service drivers are expected to arrive at the same time each day within a one-hour window.

How to LAND it there

Find your Partner: all participating LAND libraries are listed on the LAND Partners list arranged alphabetically by OCLC symbol and Institution name. Your library can ship to and receive from all the libraries on this list using the LAND program.

Place ILL items to be sent in a LAND bag, zip the bag closed, and secure with a zip tie closure. Multiple items going to one location may be placed in the same bag; however items going to different locations must be placed in separate bags. The courier will not be opening the bags, and therefore will not be able to sort items within the same bag to go to different locations. If you are sending an item that does not fit in a LAND bag, you may send the item in a padded mailer or box. Please label the package as you would a LAND bag.

How do I label the packages?

All the courier requires on the label is the name and city of the originating and destination library. The format of the label is the same as if you are addressing an envelope. Place the destination in the middle of the label with a larger font and your library in smaller print in the upper left hand corner. A label template is available for your use, however pre-cut 3 x 5 index cards will also fit in the windowed envelope.

Here’s a template of how the 3″x5″ label should look (note the variables to be filled in are in italics)

Libraries Participating in LAND

Currently  there are 113 LAND Libraries.  All of whom are among the 145 members of NYSHEI.

Tracking and Reporting Statistics

LAND offers tracking at the library level.  Your library will be issued a barcode which should be placed at your designated pickup and delivery location. Your courier is required to scan this barcode at every stop. This allows LAND bags to be tracked as they move through the system. Item level tracking is not available at this time.

Your library should also track LAND usage. All LAND participants should count the number of bags and items sent by LAND each month, and retain thorough records.

LAND Participants as Preferred Lenders – Using Custom Holdings

If your library participates in LAND  you may wish to create a LAND Custom Holdings Group. Custom Holdings is an OCLC ILL feature that allows you to automatically display holdings for groups of preferred lenders.
